M\u00e9t\u00e9o-France has placed the H\u00e9rault department under an orange alert for the risk of thunderstorms, effective from 5.00 pm on Monday 24 August, and under a yellow alert for the risk of rain and flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A brief but intense spell of rain and thunderstorms is expected in the late afternoon and early evening. The thunderstorm cells will move rapidly from west to east across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Locally severe weather is possible, particularly in the lowlands and near the coast:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u26c8\ufe0f sudden, severe thunderstorms; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\ud83e\uddca hailstorms, which may be severe; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\ud83d\udca8 strong gusts of wind reaching speeds of 90 to 120 km\/h; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\ud83c\udf27\ufe0f heavy rainfall, with up to 50\u201370 mm in an hour; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\ud83c\udf0a Surface runoff and rapid rises in water levels in some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The public are urged to remain extremely vigilant throughout the duration of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In particular, it is recommended that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- limit travel whilst storms are passing through; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- avoid non-essential travel; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- never drive onto a flooded road or through a ford; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- take shelter in a solidly built building whilst storm cells are passing through; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- put away or secure any objects that could be blown away by the wind; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- avoid outdoor activities, wooded areas and the banks of watercourses; ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 keep abreast of developments and follow the authorities\u2019 guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do not take any risks when faced with a flooded road or ford: just a few tens of centimetres of water can be enough to sweep a vehicle away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The emergency services and the authorities remain on standby and are closely monitoring developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
